Sylvan Lake is a resort community with a municipal population of 10,729, in addition to 5 nearby summer villages, 2 rural municipalities and many seasonal residents who make up the service district. The community is very conveniently situated on a beautiful lake in Central Alberta, 15 minutes from Red Deer, a city of 70 000, and less than 2 hours from Edmonton, Calgary, and the Rocky Mountains. Sylvan Lake has 6 schools, including one built in 2007.

The Library was built in 2000. It is a lovely and contemporary 6000 sq. foot building which includes the local Archives Society, a full service specialty coffee bar, a fireplace, and two public program rooms. The staff consists of 3 full- time and 5 part-time staff, as well as a number of volunteers. The Sylvan Lake Municipal Library is a member of the Parkland Regional Library System.

The Sylvan Lake Municipal Library Board: The library is governed by a volunteer board of trustees. The SLML Board sets library policy and ensures that the library meets both the needs of the community and the requirements of provincial legislation.

The Sylvan Lake and District Archives: are located at the East end of the Library building and may be accessed via the East door. Hours of operation are 1-4 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Everyone is welcome to stop in for a visit and to view the Archives impressive collection of historical photos and documents. The Archives Society is a non-profit society which operates independently of the Library and is run entirely by volunteers. Phone number 403-887-6296.
